Edmonton, AB -- The Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League’s Calgary United FC scored an 8-5 victory over the Edmonton Drillers at St. Albert’s Servus Place Friday night.
United FC’s third consecutive road victory allowed the side to move into top spot in the CMISL standings. With the victory, Calgary finished the 10-game regular season with a record of 8-2.
The Drillers, meanwhile, saw their record slip to 7-2 on the season with the loss. However, Edmonton holds the tie-breaker advantage over Calgary and can still finish first overall with a win against the Saskatoon Accelerators at Credit Union Centre Sunday afternoon.
Sunday’s Drillers-Accelerators matinee is the final game on the CMISL’s 2008 regular season schedule.
Should Calgary and Edmonton finish with identical 8-2 records, the Drillers would be awarded first-place by virtue of their superior “points for/points allowed” differential in the four head-to-head meetings between the sides this season. A home turf win by the Accelerators (4-5) would guarantee Calgary’s first-place finish.
Friday’s Calgary-Edmonton clash was a preview of the CMISL championship. The Drillers and United FC meet again in the one-game winner-take-all championship match slated for Servus Place March 14.
United FC and the Drillers secured their berths in the CMISL championship, which features the league’s top two seeds, with doubleheader sweeps in Week 7.
