Saskatoon, SK -- The Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League's Calgary United FC claimed the final berth in the league championship with a doubleheader sweep of the Saskatoon Accelerators at Credit Union Centre Sunday afternoon.
Calgary posted a 6-3 victory in the opener and blanked their hosts 5-0 in the nightcap. Calgary now faces the Edmonton Drillers in the CMISL’s one-game championship playoff scheduled for March 14 at St. Albert’s Servus Place.
Edmonton earned its way into the final with a doubleheader sweep of Winnipeg at Servus Place to kick off Week 7 in the CMISL.
United FC improved to 7-2 on the year with the sweep and became the first CMISL team to post a road victory this season. The back-to-back losses knocked Saskatoon out of playoff contention and dropped the Accelerators’ seasonal log to 4-5.
Edmonton, meanwhile, has two games remaining on the schedule and cannot finish lower than second. The Drillers host Calgary March 7 and wrap up the CMISL’s 10-game regular season in Saskatoon March 9.
The outcome of the March 7 clash between Calgary and Edmonton will determine the league’s first-place finisher.
United FC could clinch top spot in the CMISL standings with a victory over the Drillers, while an Edmonton victory would guarantee the Drillers a first-place finish.
