Edmonton Clinches Berth in CMISL Championship

Edmonton AB -- The Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League's Edmonton Drillers guaranteed themselves a berth in the league championship with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Winnipeg Alliance Football Club at Servus Place Friday night.
The Drillers rolled to an 8-3 victory in the opening game of the twinbill before posting a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
With the sweep, Edmonton improved to 7-1 on the year and are undefeated in five regular season starts on Servus Place turf this season. Winnipeg, meanwhile, finished the 2008 CMISL campaign with an 0-10 record.
The Drillers have two games remaining on the schedule and cannot finish lower than second. Edmonton hosts Calgary March 7 and wraps up its regular season in Saskatoon March 9.
Calgary United FC can secure the remaining berth in the championship with a doubleheader sweep of the Saskatoon Accelerators Sunday, March 2 at Saskatoon’s Credit Union Centre.
The first- and second-place finishers in the CMISL standings will compete in the one-game championship playoff scheduled for Servus Place March 14.
