Heartbreak Hotel weekend for the Alliance

1/6/10 - The Winnipeg Alliance opened up their season with a road trip state side.

Starting off in Detroit on Saturday night the Winnipeg Alliance looked to get off on the right foot only to lose a heartbreaker in overtime.

Drew Ducker of the Detroit Waza opened the scoring at 8:31 in the first quarter. Winnipeg’s Kyle Gibson quickly answered back 9 seconds later putting a shot behind Detroit goal keeper Kris Lyons.

Each team then traded off goals for the rest of the game. Tommy Eller and Nikki Djoki who put three goals by Alliance keeper Antonio Lupinetti tallied for Detroit while Ken Sacramento and Bill Economou put points on the board for Winnipeg.

In overtime Detroit’s Ryan Mallord scored with 56 seconds left to send Winnipeg to Ohio with a loss.

Traveling to Canton, Ohio for Sunday’s match against the Vortex, Winnipeg was looking to return home with a weekend split.

The Vortex jumped out to a quick 2 – 0 lead before Tony Fearano scored for Winnipeg to make it 2 -1 at the end of the first quarter. Winnipeg went to work quickly to tie the game when Matthew McLaren put a shot behind Nate Rausch just 28 seconds into the second quarter. Each team traded goals until Tom Foderaro scored with 25 seconds left to give Winnipeg 6 -5 at the half

The Vortex came out strong in the second half of the game scoring eight unanswered goals over the Alliance. It was a little too late when Tony Ferlaino and Kyle Gibson scored with under 3 minutes remaining to cut the Vortex lead to just five.
